Im am as pleased as punch to be able to have this interview on this site.
These words are from without a doubt the most genuine person I have come across in my time.
The Gentleman of Oi! as he’s known and some one im glad to call a pal and fellow East Ender….(lol its got to be the Pie and mash that makes us great)
My Terry Hayes. Lead singer with the East End Badoes.
Tel. First off a lot of West Ham fellas will be reading this and they will want to know how former band member Andy Russell AKA Skully is getting on with G and R London and are you looking forward to working with him again via G and R?
Tel H. G and R as we all know is Mick Geggus and Andy Russell’s project and all Is running well. Mick and Andy are really serious about this company And they are both working their bollocks off to make this work and it will. As for working with/for call it what you want, will be great for the band. Last August we recorded our tracks for the Kings of Street Punk album I Think the 2 songs sound great and a lot of that is down to Mick being at the controls in the studio, as I said earlier they will make this work.
Tel. One last thing about Skully. I’m trying to do a little interview with him about G and R. Do you think he will go for it?
Tel H. Tel, when I got these set of questions I know you was trying to get it sorted but as I’m writing it there is one already up and posted, that says a lot about the way I work, that’s probably the reason our album is taking so long to sort out.
Tel.What made you reform the band after all these years?
Tel H. Tel, I went off the going to gigs thing for quite a few years
Through the late 80s and 90s, not being bothered to get up off me arse, quite a few people go through that sort of thing but I started to get the gig bug
back again in the late 90s, but going back to about 2001 Watford Jon would always say get up with Argy and do 1 or 2 numbers, and I loved it, so I thought fuck it, get the old Badoes back together. So I got in touch with
Skull, Rushie and Silly (that being our pet name for Mark Webb, our drummer).
Alas no one wanted to do it (Skull couldn’t because his work too him all over the world and I couldn’t really ask him to come back from China to play a gig at
the 12 bar cause I know Barnet wouldn’t pay his ex’s) so I just asked a
Few people who I know and the Badoes were back firing on all cylinders. In the early days 1st time round I think our songs would have stood up against the best around at that time but unfortunately they never really got to see the light of day, only on a few occasions, our gigs at that time were really our
Rehearsals, we used to get more people than some bands were getting at
Their gigs. Back in the days, that line will become relevant when you see us live, that’s if you do!
Tel. What band or bands has influenced you personally?
Tel H.I used to go to punk gigs starting back in 76 and there wasn’t 1
Band that stood out more than other for me, seeing the Ramones at the
Roundhouse, seeing the Clash playing the Rainbow again Sunday afternoon/evenings at the Roundhouse, it was just going to those gigs at that time being at the start of something like this was superb. Going up and down the country with all our mates from Poplar, the Island, Bow, Stepney following Cock Sparra, some of their shows in them days were quite funny, our firm would turn up at some
Shows and there would be more of us than the rest of the crowd, and I tell ya that happened on more than one occasion, but they were great outings. Then in 78 they split up and that fucked that. Then came 79/80s with the
Start of the OI! Scene, the Rejects, Upstarts and 4Skins to name a few,
but it was the Rejects who were my main influence and no I’m not just
saying it because Mick and Jeff are mates of mine, anyone who was as into punk /OI as I was at the time and coming from a couple of miles from door to door from them, could not be influenced by their sound.
Tel. How do you see the Oi movement at the moment, can it get any better?
Tel H. Oi! As I see it today is doing all right there are some good new
Bands about along with the established band. Oi! /Street punk in this country is a small fish in a big pond, where music is concerned. And I can never see it appealing to the masses, it will not be allowed to, due to the wankers who run our radio/TV stations, if they have anything on there it would only
be detrimental and to slag it off and that is because the majority of
people who follow are British.
Tel. Who at the moment are in the band and what’s happened to Joe?
Tel.The band at the moment is myself, don Warwick on bass, Chris
Tibbott on guitar and on drums for our next few shows is young Cherry from Code1, but since Joe left we have had a great friend of ours from the Dropkick Murphy’s
Play for us on 3 occasions Matt Kelly and last but not least our great
Mater from viva Las Vegas Tarik, formerly of the Warriors and Gun Dog. And lets not forget Dave Thompson formerly of Argy Bargy and Lowlife UK another great friend, all of them have really stepped up to the plate when help was needed, and now we also have a second guitarist Dave Haystacks from Superyob/Concrete Gods fame who I would call a great friend, but im not! After the comment he put on this site about our super top draw outfit, Eh
Dave? Lol. As for Joe he had to return to the USA as his dads work for
The US Navy came to an end over here. I do really Miss Joe, especially when he was pissed as he would knock 7 bells of shit out the rest of the band; you had to be there to witness it…fucking great.
Tel How does your family find it seeing you up there on stage and do they cheer you on?
Tel H. My son who is 12 can take it or leave it, actually he thinks we are crap. My wife was very supportive at the start telling me to give it another shot but now as it is 2 years next month since we had our first rehearsal she gets a bit wound up when I/we go off abroad somewhere. As for my three girls 16,18,19 they attend our shoes on a regular basis, my 18 year old Liberty often gets up with us and gives a song or two she has also over the last 6 months sung with the Dropkick Murphy’s on about 4 occasions over here,
In Europe and in the USA. Yes the girls actually like the whole scene.
Tel.. Who writes the lyrics to your songs and who does the music?
Tel H. It’s a bit of a joint venture. I write, Dom writes and Joes done a bit of writing as well. Joe being our first drummer Dom and Chris sort out the music but when I write I try to work a melody out myself sometimes it works sometimes it don’t.
Tel.What recordings have you made to date and what have you in the pipeline?
Tel H. This is a bit of a bug bear at the moment. The original band put out
1 track on the Back On The Streets ep that come out along with the 4
original Oi! Album Oi Oi That’s Yer Lot. Since I got the band going again we have only done a 9 track demo CD and 2 tracks on the yet to be released King Of Street punk which will be out very soon. We have got quite a few new tracks/songs done and cannot wait to record them but as for a rock solid date, there isn’t one, unfortunately.
Tel. What gigs have you lined up and with who?
Tel H.We were meant to be playing in Belfast on the 16th but we fucked up by a total lack of communication letting our friends from Running Riot down, we
will make that up to the sooner rather than later. We are playing in
London at the 12Bar on Saturday 23rd as advertised in gig section, we were again supposed to play with Argy Bargy at the Ace Café in July but I’ve just been told that Argy have had to pull out, not spoken to Jon as of yet, we are in
Blackpool at Rebellion in august the Brittany, Valencia, Finland
rearranged with Argy at the Ace Café in October, all dates tbc.
Tel. If you could pick any band from the past or present to gig with who would it be and why?
Tel H. Easy: The Ramones from the past and the Dropkicks from the present. The Ramones because seeing them over the years have given me some great memories and the Dropkicks because they are friends and we always end up having a good drink with the lads.
Tel. What would say to date has been your best gig and why?
Tel H.Our last gig which was in Amsterdam and why, because a lot of our
Friends said it was the best they had seen us, also the reaction from a
lot of the euro crowd who hadn’t.
Tel. Do you plan to release any live material?
Tel H.I would like to say yes but we have got to concentrate on getting
our studio CD out anyway go on you tube and you can see our full live show from Wasted Blackpool 2006.
Tel. In any order name you’re all time favorite tracks and why are they?
Tel H.I cannot answer this because my music tastes are so varied. This
answer is going to come back and kick me up the arse, I know it. Al Jolson, Frank Sinatra, Patsy Kline, Elvis, Buddy Holly especially, because these remind me of our old family parties at my nans house when I was a kid, which were practically weekly events. Don’t forget my mum on the piano as well! Through to Sweet who were a great band, Slade, Marc Bolan/T Rex along with the old Trojan sound which my sister got me into, a funny thing is her and her mates were skin girls when it all kicked off her in the late 60s and I have pictures to prove it much to her horror. Then came the Pistols and
Ramones who were and still are to me second to none. Then the Oi thing started which the Rejects were streets ahead off the pack. But my favorite band for about the last 8 years is the Dropkick Murphys for me no one comes near them because of the power and energy they put into their shows.
Tel. There are so many newer or, newish bands out there like Retaliator (who I think are the Dogs bollox).Out of them who would you like to gig with….[Say Retaliator Say Retaliator?
Tel H.Funny you should ask this question Tel, we have just been asked to play with Retaliator (who I think are bollocks as well) but its in Valencia in October, we should sort something out for over here really, up to a few months ago I was talking to Pete but they were really busy recording plus some personal problems so he could not really commit the lads to anything, but watch this space. Also it would be good if Milky and the lads from Index could share a gig with us, maybe their debut gig back, again watch this space.
Tel.In the old days the main pubs were the Brit and The Bridge House both in the East End. If a pub could be found again in The East End for regular gigs would you support this idea and, do you think some of the other older faces would?
Tel H. It would be great if a venue could be found out, this way that
would entertain our type of music and yes I do think people would get behind it.
These words are from without a doubt the most genuine person I have come across in my time.
